What is online education?
Online education is a process of learning through the internet using technologies such as content, videos and audios for imparting training and education.
Advancements in information technology in recent decades have opened the opportunities for virtual learning among students and working professionals from different corners of planet and have enabled them to earn a degree of their choice from virtually any university and institution located anywhere offering such type of education. This type of learning is called online education meaning that in this system the education programs are conducted completely over the internet.
How it started?
The idea of online education began during the early 1990s when computer-based lectures were rendered to students through email. Over time, CD-ROMS became popular, but now with the availability of newer and interactive technologies, virtual learning has gained greater prominence than anytime in the past. More and more people have returned back to their computer seats to explore educational opportunities online.
What are the advantages?
Advantages are many and they are also unbelievable! Online education does not distinguish its students. It is just for anyone from any part of the world with simple access to the internet. Whether it is a college-going student or a housewife or a working professional or a retired employee, anyone can apply and attend classes online with flexibility of time. Online education is also cost-effective; students do not have to pay exorbitant fees to their universities nor there is need to travel long distances to attend classes. Online education uses latest technologies to provide world-class education to students; this also means that besides undergoing regular courses, they are also empowered with the knowledge of these technologies. This type of learning also enables deeper involvement of teachers with students facilitating increased sharing of experiences and knowledge.
How many are benefitting?
According to "Sloan Consortium," there were around 3.5 million students studying at online learning institutions of higher education in the United States alone during the year 2006. By 2014, this figure is expected to rise to 81 per cent of the total enrolment in post-secondary education.
