Breyer State University - Online Doctorate in Grief Counseling program consists of 60 semester hours. The courses include Grief, Death and Dying (6 hrs), Grief after Sudden Loss (6 hrs), Clinical Dimensions of Anticipatory Mourning (6 hrs), Treatment of Complicated Mourning (6 hrs), Children and Grief (6 hrs), Parental Loss of a Child (6 hrs), Ethics in Counseling (6 hrs), Advanced Counseling Theories and Techniques (6 hrs) and Dissertation (12 hrs).

This program is recognized by the American Academy of Grief Counseling. A student can apply for certification as a grief counselor from the academy after completing the courses: Grief, Death and Dying; Grief after Sudden Loss; and Parental Loss of a Child.

A student gets 10 weeks’ time to complete an online course. If a student wants the time limit to be extended, permission of the instructor is required. An earned master degree in grief counseling, thanatology, counseling psychology, or a related field is required for getting admission in this program. The program allows students to transfer college credits/ courses earned previously during their college programs to this program.

Career Options Available for a Doctor of Philosophy in Grief Counseling
A student after completing doctorate in grief counseling can work as a grief counselor, grief educator, clinical researcher, program consultant, researcher or a bereavement specialist. Different positions exist in hospices, social service agencies, hospitals, and private clinics.
