Medical Coding is a growing field with rising demand for highly trained medical coding specialists. A number of hospitals and medical offices require trained professionals in this field. Main job of a medical coder is to ensure that all requests for diagnostics work issued by a physician includes standard medical coding recognized by health insurance companies. A number of universities now offer Associate Degree programs in Medical Coding. During these programs, students are given in depth knowledge about human physiology, organizational behavior, medical terminology, HCPCS concepts, computer fundamentals, procedural terminology, and ICD-9-CM coding.
Breyer State University - Online Associate in Medical Coding
Breyer State University - Online Associate in Medical Coding program provides an opportunity to the students to acquire education through online mode. A student can complete this program by choosing either the CPC track or CPC-H track.
The program consists of 72 semester hours. The main courses include: Human Anatomy and Physiology (5 hrs), HCPCS Concepts (5 hrs), Organizational Behavior (5 hrs), Medical Terminology (6 hrs), Computer Fundamentals (5 hrs), Introduction to Current Procedural Terminology (5 hrs), CPT Coding (6 hrs), ICD-9-CM Coding I (5 hrs), ICD-9-CM Coding II (5 hrs), Laboratory and Pathology I (5 hrs), and Laboratory and Pathology II (5 hrs).
The Medical Coder- CPC Track Courses include Anesthesia Coding (5 hrs), Radiology Coding (5 hrs) and Medicine Coding (5 hrs).
Medical Coder - CPC-H Track Courses include Medical Insurance Coding (5 hrs), Medical Insurance Billing (5 hrs) and Medical Law and Ethics (5 hrs).
Students can transfer college credits/ courses earned previously during their college programs to this program. For associate degree program, up to 75% of credits can be transferred from other universities. Up to 15 semester hours of credits can be received through life and work experience.
A student needs to possess a high school diploma or an earned GED to get admission in this program. After completing this program, a student can appear in the exam of the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) to become a certified coder.
